Reverse sneezing in dogs

A normal sneeze expels air through the nasal cavity.

Its far more alarming to hear your dog reverse sneeze or backward sneeze. It sounds like the dog is struggling to breath.  It will be breathing in rapidly, making a loud snorting gagging sound. This lasts for a short time, meanwhile the dog is bringing air into his body to help remove an irritant that is far up in the respiratory tract behind the nose.

This is not uncommon for dogs and said to be more common in breeds with short muzzles.

Backward sneezing is not harmful and your dog will appear normal before and after a reverse sneeze.
Most dogs never get treated for this condition. If your dog reverse sneezes often you may want to check with your dog's Veterinarian for possible causes.

COOLER WEATHER

With cooler weather approaching

Rodenticides with the colder weather mice move inside so at many cottages trailer or country homes many owners use Rat poison.

Induce Vomiting but only if the dog just ate it! These poisons affect the dog’s blood clotting factors. Even eating a rodent which has eaten poison will have disastrous effects on your pet. Symptoms are usually serious convulsion and hemorrhage. Get your pet to a veterinarian so he can receive a Vitamin K shot to help restore your dog’s clotting ability.

We use Bounce Sheets to deter mice, at our trailer and it seems to work quite well. Remember to place the sheets where your dogs will not be able to reach them.

EXPRESSING ANAL GLANDS

ANAL GLANDS

These two scent glands are located on either side of the lower half of the interior anus. The secretion that comes from the gland is a brownish liquid that has a strong odor.

Dogs use these glands to identify each other and for territorial marking.

Normal working glands express as your dog has a bowel movement; the stool pushes on  both sides of the anus and expresses the glands. Dogs will often express their anal glands     if frightened or under stress.

EXPRESSING ANAL GLANDS

Most dogs have no problem expressing their own anal glands. However, if you notice your dog licking his anus or dragging his bottom on the ground, those are indicators that   the anal glands are full and your dog is having trouble empting the sacs.

The most common reason for glands to get impacted is soft stool. Your dog’s soft stool doesn’t create the pressure needed to release the glands. When this happens you will need to take matters into your own hands and manually express your dogs glands.

HOW TO EXPRESS ANAL GLANDS

1.      You need medical or rubber gloves

2.   You will need Vaseline or other lubricant

3.    Damp warm cloth

There are two ways you can empty glands.

First put gloves on, pinch the dog’s anus from the outside, massaging the glands upwards to the tiny openings.

If this doesn’t work then lubricate your glove on the index finger. Use that finger to insert into your dogs anus. You will feel the sacs on either side of the anus wall. Massage upward applying pressure until the gland releases. Then repeat on the other gland. Wipe the dog anus with warm clean cloth.

If blood or pus is present in the secretion your veterinarian should be contacted. If you are unable to express or if the glands seem swollen your dog may have an anal gland abscess. Seek your veterinarian’s advice.

Trailer fun JUST CHiILLING

I learned a valued lessons yesterday, Newla my Border Collie loves the trailer she loves us being outdoors more then in and she loves the space.
Newla also love Frisbee above all else.
So we were hiking down a bell line since its a cleared part of the woods, tossing her Frisbee as she joyfully retrieved and brought it back for another throw. A young deer appeared well the chase was on I thank God that our Greyhounds where on leash.
NO amount of calling phased her. She was into the woods after the deer.
40 minutes a very long 40 minutes of searching calling and trying to get through thick bush with no results.
We stayed in the general area and she returned to us soaked and panting.
The rest of the stay was far less eventful rides in the canoe, the grey crashed out on the deck,
blowing bubbles for Rainer, and Hagrid our older border just likes to hang in the trailer he hates bugs.

Antler Powder

My dog Emma is a Greyhound, she is a retired Racer. Life on the track must on being traumatic for her body because she suffers from sever Arthritis in her shoulders, hips, and spine. So I am always on the look out for Natural holistic products or supplements that could help her.

I recently came across Velvet Antler powder. I say recently, but the Chinese have been using Deer Antlers for medicine since the 16th century. Today Deer farms can be found all over the world and deer antlers are used as supplements in many different countries.

Deer Antler Velvet is a natural balance pet supplement, rich with vitamins, minerals,
and amino acids. It is also an natural source of Glucosamine and Chondroitin, so it has anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to lubricates and repairs joints giving the dog more mobility, more strength and builds immune systems.

I will try this product out for a month or so, and get back to you. We will see if Emma improves or feels better or maybe just not as stiff. Fingered crossed!

REST IN PEACE

REST IN PEACE

It’s so sad, that when tragedy strikes. An Ottawa woman died along with her 13 year old Dalmatian.
When I was a kid we had fire drills like at school even the Gold fish on the Piano was included in the
mapped out escape routes. Unfortunately we tend to act on emotion in these situations. Our pets
are our family so we want to save them too.
Many people drown going out on thin ice after their dogs. I certainly have run out into a busy street
to retrieve a dog crossing a road.

Things we can do have a sticker on your door for Fire fighters or Emergency crew so they know what
pets are in the house. Practice escape routes with your family.
Try to calm yourself so you can help yourself and your casualty and not become one.

More options for Arthritis

I use infra-red massage on Emma as well as the laser pen to
help manage her arthritis. I am seeing some improvement but we still have a daily route and need to continue to be diligent dealing with her joint care.
