EASTER HAZARDS

KEEP YOUR DOG SAFE FROM ALL THE EASTER CHOCOLATE

TREATMENT;  IF YOUR DOG INGESTS  CHOCOLATE !!!!!

THERE IS NO SET TOXIC DOSE WHEN IT COMES TO CHOCOLATE POISONING
OTHER FACTORS WILL ALSO NEED TO BE FIGURED IN: THE SIZE OF DOG, THE HEALTH OF THE DOG, THE AMOUNT OF CHOCOLATE CONSUMED. ALSO THE TYPE OF CHOCOLATE.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHOCOLATE HAVE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF CAFFEINE AND THEOBROMINE WHICH INCREASES THE HEART RATE.

A TOXIC DOSE IS 40 Mgs OF THEOBROMINE PER 1 OZ, OF MILK CHOCOLATE
150 Mgs OF THEOBROMINE PER 1 OZ, OF SEMI SWEET CHOCOLATE AND 400 Mgs OF THEOBROMINE  PER 1 0Z OF DARK CHOCOLATE.

SO A TOXIC DOSE IS 100 Mg OF CHOCOLATE PER 1 Kg OR (2.2 LBS) OF BODY WEIGHT.
SINCE BAKKER'S CHOCOLATE HAS THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF THEOBRIMINE A TOXIC LEVEL WOULD BE 2 BAKERS SQUARES FOR 10LBS OR (4.53Kg) DOG.

CALM SPOT

My dog Newla has actually 3 spots that she will go to calm down. Her crate in our bedroom is the most common place.

If someone comes to the door and she is over excited we will send her either to her mat or the living room crate depending on her excitement level. Also having the mat portable so it can go from room to room or easily taken with you wherever you go.

It is important to teach your dog to be able to set down for all concerned.
The dog will be less stressed you and your quests can have a visit without being bugged 24 /7 for attention

I used a clicker to train Newla to go to her crate or her mat it was fun positive with lots of treats.
The clicks and treats were weaned and now it just mat or crate and stay = HAPPINESS

Top-Selling Dog Foods With Dangerous Ingredients

CHECK OUT THIS WEBSITE:  http://www.whole-dog-journal.com

Dear Fellow Dog Lover,
You want the best for your dog - especially when it comes to his food. You read labels and try to choose the brand and formula that will nourish your furry friend.
That's why you'll be as shocked as I was, to discover that dozens of today's top-selling brands - names you thought you could trust, like Beneful, Pedigree, Purina and more - may not contain the wholesome, healthy ingredients you want for your dog.
Take Beneful. The package makes it look like manna from heaven with a healthy pup, fresh veggies, and what look like real chunks of meat. Unfortunately, the pictures make the food seem better than it is. The reality is this stuff is AWFUL for your dog. It's full of sugar, artificial colors, and 3 unnamed animal sources. And very little vegetables.
Or look at Kibbles 'n Bits Bistro Meals Grilled Chicken Flavor. If only it contained the grilled chicken they show on the bag instead of loads of low-quality ingredients and "animal digest" - the real source of the chicken flavor.

Another terrible food is Pedigree Complete Nutrition for Adult Dogs. Made with an inferior, cheap source of protein, it's a wonder it could maintain any dog's health - much less an adult dog's!

And wet foods fare no better than dry...
The label on Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy Homestyle with Beef makes it look like big pieces of beef covered in gravy. But if this is your dog's dinner, she's getting some of the lowest-quality sources of protein, held together by wheat gluten! Even Iams ProActive Health Chunks is full of by-products that are often linked to all sorts of health problems.
Is your dog's food full of used restaurant grease?
When you see "animal fat" on a label - you probably think chicken skins or beef trimmings. But, pet food regulations allow manufacturers to use all sorts of low-quality fats, even USED RESTAURANT GREASE, as generic fat sources. To make sure your dog gets healthier fats, look for labels that use a named species of animal as a source of fat, like chicken fat or duck fat.
What's more, you could be paying for healthy ingredients that aren't even in the bag. For example, because omega-3 fatty acids are so healthy, dog food manufacturers started adding DHA and EPA (highly beneficial fatty acid supplements) to many dry foods. However, they are notoriously fragile and short-lived. Plus, exposure to oxygen makes them turn rancid - and potentially dangerous - very quickly.

So, how do you know which foods can help boost your dog's health and even add years to his life - and which ones you never want to put in his bowl?

Start a risk-free subscription to The Whole Dog Journal, the monthly publication that's dedicated to bringing you proven, natural solutions for keeping your dog healthy and happy for life! Filled with reviews of food, dry, wet and raw, The Whole Dog Journal is unlike any other publication.
How dry dog food causes cancer!
When manufacturers add low-quality ingredients imported from places without adequate safety oversight, and low-cost ingredients that are often shipped and stored without refrigeration - it makes it easy for these ingredients to become rancid. Rancid fats destroy the nutritive value of the proteins and vitamins in food so much, your dog can suffer from deficiencies even though he is eating well. What's worse, these rancid fats can cause diarrhea, liver problems, arthritis, heart problems and even cancer! Don't risk your dog's health. Subscribe to The Whole Dog Journal now.

SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHERMIA

HYPOTHERMIA

Hypothermia Prevention is much easier then treating

Hypothermia occurs when your dog’s core temperature drops below normal. When your dog is losing body heat faster then, he can replace it.
Normal body temperature for a dog ranges from 100 to102.5 F or 37 to 39C

In cold weather your dog will constantly be trying to maintain his body temperature in its normal range. Dogs regulate their temperature either by conserving their body heat or by producing more body heat, this is similar to how we react to cold weather.
Shivering is one way your dog can produce body heat. Piloerection is the dog equivalent to our goose bumps- with piloerection your dog’s hair stand on end thereby trapping a layer of warmed air beneath them. This creates an additional layer of insulation between your dog’s body and the cold weather, and in doing so helps him to conserve body heat; this works much better on a properly groomed dog.
Vasoconstriction is another way your dog can conserve body heat, restricting blood flow to the extremities and keeping blood flowing to the more vial body parts, i.e. the Brain Heart and Lungs.

SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHERMIA

·         Shivering;

·         Lethargic;

·         Muscle stiffness;

·         Lack of coordination;

·         Low heart rate and Breathing rate;

·         Fixed and dilated pupils;

·         Collapse;

·         Coma

TREATMENT

With mild hypothermia your dog will be shivering and appear lethargic, moving your dog inside and wrapping in a blanket will probably do the trick, Passive rewarming.

As your dog’s temperature drops more sever measures are needed.

Moderate hypothermia remove dog from cold. Warm blankets and use heating pads but not directly on the skin apply to the truck area of the dog.

Both severe and profound hypothermia need Veterinary care immediately. At the vet clinic they can administer warm water enemas and heated fluid intravenously.  Many dogs don’t survive this

AGAIN PREVENTING IS MUCH EASIER THEN TREATING!

It up to you to find out the reason, are they hungry, thirsty, need to go out, want to play, lonely, fearful etc. Or it could be hurt or sick.

So do your self a favour don't ignore your puppy, figure out the cause and make every ones life happier.

RESOURCE GUARDING (GREAT POSTER)

To stop the development of resource guarding, teach your dog to tolerate the presence of people and other animals around his food bowl, toys, bed and other things he might regard as his and being possessive or place a high value on these things
BUT RECOGNIZE THE BODY LANGUAGE (ABOVE)

Teach your dog to trade good stuff for better stuff, then give him the original good stuff back. You want him to respond positively.

MEDICATIONS

Pilling Your DogGenerally a lot of medication given to our dogs is in a meatball made from canned dog food so there is no issue pilling. Or pill pockets a treat that hides the pill in a specially designed pocket for pills. Some dogs are smart and will eat a round the meatball or treat leaving the pills. Some medication needs to be given on an empty stomach. So you will need to know how to pill your dog, here is how
To pill a dog.
1. Place one hand over dog’s muzzle adding pressure with your thumb-behind the canine tooth-this will open your dog’s mouth slightly.
2. Take your other hand (the one holding the pill) and pull down on jaw.
3. Place the pill as far back and as centered on your dogs tongue as possible.
4. Holding the dog’s mouth closed, blow on its nose or stroke it’s throat. That helps swallowing.
5 If the dog licks his nose he more than likely has swallowed the pill.

Vomiting and Darrhea in dogs WHAT TO DO?

WHAT TO DO?

Today my girlfriend call 3 of her 4 dogs have diarrhea and vomiting.  My advise is stop food for 24 hours. This gives the intestines a chance to rest or re group.
Check yard for anything abnormal garbage etc, anything the dogs might of got into. New bag of Dog  the food maybe off if all the dogs are ill.

Next day a Bland diet in small portions to see if the dog can keep it down . Normally I suggest Lean Hamburger boiled rinsed and drained. also added white rice no salt or butter.

You can also check your dogs temperature to see if he has a fever.

If the dogs are lethargic, eyes look dull or are dehydrated from vomiting and diarrhea a trip to the vet will be in order.

Other Medication you may want to try
In homeopathy, arsenicum album (Arsen. alb.) is a solution prepared by diluting aqueous arsenic trioxide generally until there is little or no arsenic remaining in the solution. It is used by homeopaths to treat a range of symptoms that include digestive disorders

Nux Vomica is the major digestive remedy used by many homoeopaths.
No home should be without Nux Vomica  Fast relief from the gas and indigestion

FROSTBITE Puppy are far more Susceptible

FROSTBITE

Often frostbite and hypothermia go hand in hand: both are caused by prolonged exposure to extreme cold.

Frostbite is localized damage to tissue due to freezing temperatures in which the fluid in individual body cells is frozen. Frostbite usually occurs on areas less protected; like tips of the ears or tails or a dog's scrotum. These areas are also less protected by hair.

Dogs do certainly get cold feet, but somehow it’s a rarity that they actually get frost bitten feet. Some vets believe the thicker skin on the pads protect the feet.; there is also the fact that dogs can tuck their feet in against their bodies.

If the skin freezes it no longer has a blood supply, the tissue will be pale white or bluish in colour.  Without a blood supply the tissue will die. You need to get your dog into a warm place.  Warming frozen tissue must be done slowly and very gently - do not rub, as this may fracture the frozen cells and do irreparable damage. Frostbitten tissue may peel.  Warm the tissue with a hairdryer on low heat or with warm water. If circulation does return, this tissue will be red and swollen and extremely sore.

Treat with antibiotic cream and bandage lightly. If severely frostbitten tissue doesn’t regain blood supply a Veterinarian will be needed to remove dead tissue.

Fortunately frostbite can be prevented in many cases. In extreme cold your dogs will

start lifting their feet and stop to lick them. These are indicators letting us know its time to bring them in. Frostbite can occur in as little as 15 minutes to exposed skin. If your dog lives outside you will need to make sure he stays warm and dry. Start with an insulated dog house only big enough to stand and turn around if it’s too big it will be harder for your dog to stay warm. The dog house should be sheltered from the wind.  The dog house should also be on some sort of platform off the frozen ground. Door flaps will help to keep drafty wind out.

Bedding can be shredded news paper or blankets - but blankets hold moisture. Fresh straw or hay is considered the best. All dogs need access to fresh water. In the winter it is even more important because dehydration happens more because the body is using up energy trying to stay warm. Electric pails are available to keep the water from freezing.  These precautions will help keep your dog safe from the winter hazards.
