Although it is usually thought of as a pampered house pet, the cocker spaniel is actually a skilled hunter and retriever of game birds. Instead of pointing to the birds, the cocker flushes it and drives it towards the hunter, who is waiting with his gun in hand. This dog gets its name from the woodcock, the bird it is originally bred to hunt.
